Neighbourhood Facades and Wall Murals Beneath an Evening Sky
Twilight settles over the Bogside neighbourhood near Free Derry Corner, with street lights coming on beneath a textured sky. Large murals occupy the ends of residential buildings, while an empty road and railings run across the foreground. I photographed this Derry scene in black and white, keeping the surrounding streets as much a part of the view as the painted walls.
The nearest mural fills the right-hand facade, its figures visible beneath a bright light near the roof. Across the view, another painted wall stands beside a street lamp whose light forms a small star. Between them, repeated windows and modest pitched roofs give the neighbourhood a quieter architectural rhythm. The road markings guide the eye through the lower part of the photograph, and the railings create a continuous line separating pavement from roadway. Above, the cloud layers remain distinct even as daylight fades.
I like the way evening brings these different parts together. The murals are substantial, but the photograph also holds ordinary windows, street furniture and the open road. Made in 2019, it offers a view of a place where large public images sit within everyday residential life. The monochrome treatment allows the buildings, painted figures and sky to share a restrained palette while retaining their different textures. For someone with a connection to Derry or an interest in urban photography and public murals, this image can bring a recognisable neighbourhood scene to a study or living space, with the twilight light giving it a measured, reflective mood.
