Paris Lights Beyond the Shadowed River Boats
The Eiffel Tower shines above the Seine, its illuminated latticework rising from a dark riverfront into an open night sky. Boats sit close to the camera in the foreground, while lights on the opposite bank cast bright marks across the water. This black and white photograph pairs a familiar Paris landmark with the quieter life along its river.
From my vantage point across the Seine, I wanted the tower to remain part of a setting. The dark hulls and low decks bring the river close, giving the view a sense of where I was standing. Beyond them, the water separates the near bank from the tower and the buildings beside it.
I like the difference between the light on the structure and the light in the river. The tower’s details stay crisp and regular. Their reflections, together with those of the riverside lamps, stretch and soften across the moving surface. Small points of brightness punctuate the bank, but none competes with the tower’s height.
I made this photograph in Paris in 2008. Monochrome lets the scene rest on those differences in illumination, with enough darkness around the boats to preserve the atmosphere of the evening. It is a view for someone who remembers the city after dark, or enjoys architectural photography with a strong sense of surroundings. The tower is immediately recognisable; the river and foreground give it a more personal approach.
