A Broad Smile and Moving Hands in Stage Light
A singer smiles into the room with a microphone in one hand and the other caught in motion. I photographed this live performance in a Havana jazz club in black and white, letting the stage light define the face and suit against the dark background. The slight blur of the moving hand gives the portrait a sense of the performance continuing beyond the frame.
I was there with my wife that evening, enjoying the music with my camera beside me. When the singer leaned into the light and lifted the microphone, I recognized a moment worth photographing. I kept the view close enough for the smile and gesture to remain central, while leaving the dark space above and behind him to hold the atmosphere of the club. The microphone extends toward the left, and the moving hand crosses the foreground, giving the composition two distinct lines of movement around the face.
Monochrome brings the light on the forehead, cheeks, and jacket into a clear sequence of tones. I like how the face remains sharp enough to anchor the image even while the hands suggest motion. For someone drawn to jazz photography or expressive performance portraits, this photograph carries a particular evening in Havana through a small number of visible details. The suit, microphone, broad smile, and stage shadows are enough to bring me back to being in that room. It is the combination of a recognizable person and a fleeting gesture that I wanted to preserve, rather than a view of the whole stage.
