Abandoned Dodge Truck Interior | Black and White Photography
A Weathered Cab Slowly Reclaimed by the Woods
The steering wheel caught me first. It sits prominently inside this abandoned Dodge truck cab, surrounded by a dashboard that has been partly stripped and slowly encroached upon by the woods outside.
I made this photograph in 2005, framing the interior through the open side of the cab rather than standing back to show the entire truck. That closer viewpoint turned the driver's space into the subject. The thin steering wheel, long gear lever, old instrument cluster, worn bench seat, peeling surfaces, and branches reaching into the cab carry the story on their own.
Black and white felt right for the scene because so much of the photograph is about shape, texture, and deterioration. The sweeping curve of the door frame becomes a border around the interior, while the bright forest beyond the windshield pushes against the dark dashboard and steering column. Nature is visible through every opening, but it is also beginning to move inside.
What interests me most is not simply that the Dodge was abandoned. It is the strange intimacy of seeing a machine from the driver's position after its working life has ended. The controls remain recognizable. The seat is still there. Yet the cab has become part vehicle, part woodland debris. That collision between something built to move and a scene that has become completely still is what made me stop.
