Repeating Caps And Uniforms Recede Toward The Street Steps

The police line runs diagonally through this Toronto G20 photograph, beginning with cropped figures close to the camera and narrowing toward the steps in the background. I made the image during the 2010 summit. In black and white, the repetition of caps, dark uniforms, equipment, and shoes gives the formation a strong visual rhythm.

I chose a viewpoint along the line rather than facing it straight on. That angle allows each officer to overlap the next, while the open strip of street on the right makes the formation's depth easier to see. The nearest figures are softer; farther into the frame, faces and uniform details come into clearer focus before the line compresses again.

Within the repetition, there are small differences worth noticing. Heads turn at different angles, hands rest in different positions, and equipment breaks up the outlines of the uniforms. Those variations keep the photograph connected to individuals even though the larger subject is the assembled line.

Beyond the officers, people stand near the steps, including a photographer with a camera raised. They give the scene another layer without replacing its main subject. I am interested in how a photograph of a public event can hold both an overall arrangement and these smaller observations. Here, perspective carries the eye through the formation, and the monochrome tones make its changing scale especially clear.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
