Two Antique Porcelain Dolls in Toned Still Life Photography

A Rose Dress and Pale Bonnet Against Repeating Textile Patterns

Two antique porcelain dolls sit side by side against patterned fabric in this close still-life photograph. One wears a muted rose dress; the other has a pale bonnet and a broad ribbon tied below the chin. I photographed them within their display, using a toned treatment with selective colour to keep those differences visible.

The smaller doll at the left has loose dark hair around its face and a narrow bow on the dress. The larger doll’s bonnet gathers into soft folds around the head, while its ribbon spreads over the shoulders. Their painted features are clearly separated from the darker hair and background. Behind them, the fabric repeats rounded shapes across the upper part of the frame. That consistent pattern contrasts with the individual folds, strands of hair, and faces in front of it.

I encountered the pair during a visit to an antique display in 2025. What interested me was how two similar objects could create such different points of attention within one view. I kept them close together in the composition, preserving their placement and enough of the textile to show their setting. The rose tone introduces a small area of warmth, while the pale bonnet gives the right side a broader shape. For me, the photograph holds the experience of looking slowly into a display cabinet, finding both the shared character of the dolls and the details that distinguish them. The pairing offers another way to follow each face, with the surrounding fabric keeping them connected.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
