White House Ruin Canyon de Chelly Black and White Photography
Small Stone Dwellings Beneath a Vast Streaked Canyon Wall
The cliff makes the dwellings look remarkably small. At White House Ruin in Canyon de Chelly, weathered stone walls sit beneath an immense rock face, with another section tucked into a higher recess. I photographed the scene in black and white to bring out the relationship between the built forms and the canyon surrounding them.
The lower ruins have broken outlines, small openings and coarse stonework that remain distinct against the lighter rock behind. Above them, the cliff carries long streaks, sweeping layers and deep cracks. Its scale is reinforced by how far those marks extend beyond the buildings.
I kept both levels of the site within the frame. The upper walls occupy a narrow ledge near the shadowed alcove, while the lower structures rest closer to the open ground. Seeing them together makes their different positions within the rock face part of the photograph’s story.
Light separates the surfaces without removing their texture. Pale areas of sandstone sit beside darker recesses, and the ruins cast smaller shadows of their own. Across the foreground, sparse vegetation and uneven ground provide a more immediate sense of place.
What drew me here was the meeting of human construction and the much larger landscape. The remaining walls do not compete with the cliff; they sit within its shape. The photograph holds that balance, with the canyon’s broad patterns surrounding the finer details of the ancient dwelling.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
