Names and Drawings Layer Across Blue and Yellow Paint
Names, drawings, and handwritten notes cover blue and yellow paint at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana, Cuba. Large black letters overlap a much finer field of marks, while red, green, and other small colour accents appear throughout. This close photograph turns the bar’s written-on wall into a dense arrangement of lines and colour.
The wall was what stayed with me during this visit. I spent time with the camera, waiting for the light to reveal enough of the surface to show its layers. The larger marks catch attention first, but they never replace the smaller ones beneath them. Looking closely keeps uncovering another name, shape, or fragment of a note.
The painted areas give the image a clear structure. A narrow yellow section at the left contrasts with the larger blue field, and a darker band runs along the bottom. These divisions keep the many inscriptions together visually, even though the writing itself follows no single direction or scale.
I made this photograph in 2017, keeping the view close rather than including the rest of the bar. The colour is part of its character, providing a lively background for the overlapping handwriting. As a Havana photography print, the image offers an urban texture that rewards slow inspection. It is the accumulation of small, individual marks—not one dominant message—that makes the wall compelling to me.
