Vikvatnet Lake Landscape Photography With Ice and Mossy Rocks
A Frozen Lake Between Rough Boulders and Snow-Streaked Peaks
The lake is not a mirror in this view. Its ice forms pale, irregular patches behind the rough rocks, giving Vikvatnet a more broken surface than open water would. I made this photograph in Norway with the mossy boulders close in the foreground and snow-streaked mountains across the lake. The contrast between those textures is what holds the scene together for me.
The nearest rock has a broad, uneven face, softened in places by green moss and small plants. Dry stems and low vegetation fill the gaps around it, so the foreground feels detailed and tangible. Beyond that rough edge, the frozen surface is much smoother. Darker channels divide the pale areas of ice, carrying the eye towards the mountain slopes without creating a single straight path. I gave both the boulders and the lake room because the view changes when they can be seen together.
Across the distance, snow follows the folds of the mountains while other slopes show muted brown rock and ground. Grey cloud rests above the peaks, keeping the colour subdued. I am drawn to this kind of winter landscape for its variety rather than a perfect white covering: ice, exposed stone, moss and snow all retain their own character. As a print, the photograph offers natural texture for a quiet interior, but its strongest quality is the depth between the close boulders and the mountains beyond the frozen lake.
