Diagonal Steel and Sharp Shadows Cross a Brick Wall
Two tall windows sit within a pale brick wall, crossed by a fire escape and its sharply drawn shadow. This black and white architectural photograph is built around a small piece of a city facade: straight window frames, diagonal steel, and repeating lines of light and shade. The close view gives those ordinary elements a concentrated visual presence.
This wall stopped me because of the exact arrangement it offered. The windows provide a steady pair of dark rectangles, while the fire escape cuts through that balance at an angle. Its shadow adds a second set of lines, spreading across the middle of the wall and over the area above the right-hand window.
I find the distinction between the structure and its shadow particularly interesting. The metal is a solid, dark form; the shadow makes a larger pattern that changes as it falls across brick, trim, and glass. Small variations in the wall’s surface keep the geometry from feeling too polished.
Made in 2016, the image reflects the kind of urban detail I often return to. It does not need a broad street view to explain itself. The spacing, angles, and textures are enough to hold the composition together. As a monochrome architecture print, it offers a strong graphic arrangement with the character of a real, weathered building still visible beneath the pattern.
