Repeating Doors and Windows Along an Empty Street

The houses follow the street in a long, narrowing line. Pale window frames and door surrounds stand out against the darker brick, while the empty roadway gives the terrace room to be seen. I photographed this Derry street at dusk, using black and white to keep the attention on its repeated architecture.

The nearest doorway has the clearest detail, with a panelled door and a small curved surround above it. Farther along, entrances and windows become more tightly grouped, making the buildings feel connected without making them identical. Pipes run between the openings, and small changes in the brickwork give the wall a varied surface.

Below the houses, the pavement and road markings create another set of lines. They carry the eye toward the farther end of the street, where the facades become lighter and smaller. Above, a subdued sky leaves the roof edge clearly defined. I find the photograph most satisfying when the upper and lower parts are read together: the terrace establishes the pattern, and the road continues its direction.

This photograph comes from 2019 in Derry, Northern Ireland. It is a city view based on ordinary homes rather than a major landmark. I wanted to preserve the sense of a street that can be understood through its doors, windows and everyday scale. For someone drawn to monochrome architecture or Northern Irish travel photographs, the scene offers a quiet, detailed look at the built character of the city.
