Mont Saint Michel Stone Passage Black And White Photograph
One Stone Arch Opens Onto Another Narrow Passage
Looking through one arch at Mont Saint Michel, a second opening appears beyond it, surrounded by rough stonework. I photographed this passage in France in 2008 and used black and white to bring out its layers of light, shadow, and texture. The vertical composition follows the view inward, from the near arch to the quieter space behind.
The closest stones form a substantial frame. Their large blocks and curved ceiling occupy the sides and top of the image, giving the smaller opening beyond a sense of distance. I find that simple relationship compelling: the photograph offers a clear route for the eye, then keeps it occupied with the surfaces along the way.
Light from above touches the farther wall, revealing a different pattern of masonry from the foreground. Small, irregular stones sit beside more clearly cut blocks around the doorway. Below, the pale floor creates a smooth contrast to the walls and turns gently through the passage. There are no people in the view, so the architecture’s proportions and textures remain easy to read.
I wanted the stone itself to carry the atmosphere. Deep shadows give the arches weight, while softer greys reveal the worn edges and varied faces of the masonry. The image offers a close architectural experience rather than a distant view of the whole landmark. It belongs comfortably among monochrome travel photographs, with a sense of depth that keeps drawing attention back through the first arch.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
