A High Snow Edge Above Dark Forested Mountains

Snow fills the foreground of this Bugaboo Mountains photograph, rising into a distinct edge on the left before sweeping down towards the right. I photographed the slope with distant mountain ridges and clouds still visible beyond it. The close snow surface and farther landscape create two very different kinds of detail within the square frame.

Across the foreground, small hollows and uneven patches give the snow a textured appearance. Along the higher edge, a shaded face makes the change in level more pronounced. I find that line especially useful in the composition: it leads across the view while separating the brighter snow from the darker mountain slopes behind it. Trees cover sections of the nearer ridge, with more exposed peaks extending into the distance. The landscape becomes finer and less distinct as it moves away from the camera.

Black and white brings the tonal layers together. Pale snow occupies much of the lower frame, dark ridges sit across the middle, and bright clouds add larger shapes above. The sky remains an active part of the view without becoming the only point of attention. My photograph keeps the snow close enough to inspect its surface while allowing the mountains to establish depth. I enjoy how the curved foreground and the uneven distant ridges answer each other, making a landscape that moves between small texture and larger forms.
