Glacier and Sheer Rock Mountain Black and White Photography
Rough Ice Below a Snow Capped Rock Wall
The rock wall rises out of the glacier like a solid interruption in a field of white. Its near vertical face is dark, rough and deeply marked, while snow gathers across its upper slopes. I was drawn to that abrupt difference between stone and ice in this black and white mountain photograph.
The glacier is not a smooth blanket. Across the foreground, its broken surface carries grooves, ridges and winding lines that lead around the base of the rock. Higher in the scene, those complicated textures give way to much smoother snow. A pointed summit appears beyond them, standing against a dark sky and giving the view another scale.
I find the photograph strongest where these surfaces meet. The sheer face has a clear edge, but the ice below bends into a series of uneven channels. Snow softens parts of the mountain without hiding the heavier structure underneath. Monochrome makes it easier to follow those changes, from bright slopes to shadowed cracks and exposed rock.
I took this photograph in 2011, concentrating on the physical character of the mountain rather than a broad distant skyline. The close view allows the glacier’s detail to remain as important as the peak. For someone who enjoys rugged alpine landscapes, it offers a strong arrangement of snow, stone and dark sky, with fine surface detail that becomes more apparent as you look beyond the first imposing outline.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
