Pale Salt Patterns Beneath a Reflected Mountain Range
The foreground salt has a delicate pattern of cracks and raised edges, while the mountains appear twice along the upper part of the view. A narrow reflective area repeats their snowy outline beneath the darker slopes. I like how this Death Valley photograph brings close surface detail and distant mountain scale into the same quiet composition.
The pale ground occupies much of the frame. Its faint curves and rough patches are easier to notice on a closer look, and they lead toward the darker band at the horizon. Beyond it, the mountains carry blue-grey shadows and bright snow along the high ridge. The sky stays light and simple, leaving the mountain profile clear above its softer reflection.
I photographed this Badwater Basin scene in 2010. The restrained colour helps the salt, water and mountains remain connected without losing their differences. The reflection has less definition than the actual ridge, creating a gentler second shape below it. I like moving between that horizontal arrangement and the smaller, more irregular marks near the lower edge.

From farther away, the mountains and reflection give the picture its structure; closer up, the salt patterns become more apparent.
