Layered Cliffs and Deep Channels Below the Rim
The canyon opens into a dense arrangement of cliffs, ledges and narrow channels. Pale vertical rock faces stand above darker bands, while the foreground slopes toward a deep gap near the centre. I like how the view draws the eye downward first, then carries it back across the farther canyon walls.
The layers give the scene its structure. Some rock faces have long vertical grooves, while flatter ledges cut across them at different heights. Near the lower edge, the stone has finer horizontal lines and a few small plants. Those closer details help establish scale before the eye reaches the much larger formations beyond.
I photographed this Arizona landscape in 2010. Black and white brings the changing surfaces together while keeping their differences clear. Light catches the upper faces, shadows sit within the cuts and the distant rim forms a quieter band beneath the clouds. I like the balance between the canyon’s strong overall depth and the individual shelves of rock that become visible on a closer look.
