Sighisoara Man in a Broad Hat Black and White Portrait Photography

Sale price $25.00 CAD

A Direct Gaze Against Sunlit Plaster And Deep Shadow

The broad hat gives this man a strong silhouette, but it is his expression that holds me. I photographed him in Sighisoara, Romania, with his mouth slightly open and his eyes meeting the camera. In black and white, the light on his face stands out against the dark brim, moustache, and heavy jacket.

I left a substantial part of the old wall in the frame because the setting belongs to the portrait. Uneven plaster catches the sunlight beside him, while a deep opening and its shadow interrupt the lighter surface farther to the right. A narrow stretch of paving completes that small glimpse of the street without drawing attention away from his face.

His patterned sweater introduces another scale of detail. Its pale marks sit between the broad dark shapes of the coat and the fine lines around his eyes. I like how the photograph moves between those textures: clothing, skin, masonry, and plaster each have a distinct surface, yet the same light brings them together.

For me, an environmental portrait gains strength when the surroundings give the person room without overwhelming them. Here, the man occupies the left side with an immediate presence, and the architecture opens out beside him. The photograph offers both a particular face and a fragment of Sighisoara, held together by that direct exchange with the camera.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
