Scattered Wings Follow A Rising Cliff Edge
Flying seabirds fill the pale space beside a steep Bonaventure Island cliff. The rock rises diagonally from the lower left toward the upper right, giving the vertical photograph a strong boundary between solid stone and open air. I made the image in 2015, drawn to the many different wing shapes within that simple division.
Some birds are close enough to show long outstretched wings and darker edges, while others become small marks farther along the cliff. They point in different directions and occupy different heights, so the gathering has no single repeating pattern. I like how the larger birds draw attention first, then lead the eye toward the much smaller shapes below. A few pale birds appear close to the rock face, linking the open sky with the ledges.
The cliff has its own detailed rhythm. Broad sloping surfaces meet darker cracks and narrow shelves, with rough texture visible throughout the right side. That substantial area balances the delicate birds without overpowering them. Black and white keeps the comparison direct: stone grain and shadow on one side, thin flying shapes against soft grey on the other. There is no water visible here, so the photograph stays with the height of the cliff and the activity beside it. As a print, it offers an island wildlife scene with a particularly strong diagonal structure and many small details to discover within the flock.
