Iceland Basalt Columns Abstract Nature Photography
Curving Stone Columns Seen From Between Two Cliffs
The rock seems to bend. Across this Iceland basalt formation, columns fan outward on the left before meeting a more vertical wall on the right. I photographed the scene in colour, keeping the warm ochre tones and cooler grey edges that make the stone's structure so clear.
To get this view, I flew my drone down between two large basalt cliff formations. That position brought the camera into the space between them and gave me a close view of the columns. The flight is part of what makes this photograph personal to me: its perspective came from moving down into the formation, rather than looking at it from a distant viewpoint.
What holds my attention is the change in direction. Long sections lean and curve across the left side, while straighter columns create a steadier rhythm beside them. Broken stone gathers at the base, and one long fragment rests against the face. Above, the rock becomes more fractured, interrupting the sweeping lines below.
I kept the frame filled with stone, without sky or a wider landscape to pull attention away. The result sits between a geological study and an abstract composition, with the photograph's depth still visible in the gaps and overlapping edges. Its muted gold, grey and earth tones bring natural texture into a room, while the unusual geometry rewards a closer look at how the columns meet.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
