Japanese Samurai Residence Interior With Tansu Chest Black and White Photography
Wood Grain and Household Objects Above the Tatami Floor
A wooden tansu chest stands against pale wall panels inside a traditional Japanese samurai residence. I photographed the room in black and white, keeping the tatami floor, dark beams, and small household objects beside the chest within the frame. The furniture gives the quiet interior a textured centre, while the floor borders and wall framing create a clear arrangement of lines around it.
I made the photograph while exploring historic residences during my travels in Japan. On entering the room, I was drawn to the chest’s worn surface and the repeated handles across its drawers. Rather than move closer to isolate the furniture, I included the adjacent doorway and the objects resting at floor level. That wider view lets the chest remain part of the room. The opening on the left leads into another space, and the soft light across the tatami gives the foreground enough detail without competing with the darker wood.
What I enjoy is the difference between the room’s simple geometry and the more intricate surfaces within it. The drawer fronts have their own grain patterns, metal fittings add small curves, and the objects beside them introduce rounded forms against the straight floor lines. Monochrome brings those materials together while allowing each texture to remain visible. For someone drawn to Japanese interiors or quiet architectural photography, this image offers a close look at a room I encountered on my travels. I wanted to preserve the balance already present in the space, from the broad pale panels to the small details around the chest.
