Iceland Turquoise Mineral Channel Abstract Aerial Photography
A Blue Channel Winds Through Orange Geothermal Ground
A vivid blue channel gave this aerial view its direction. While flying my drone over the geothermal fields near Lake Mývatn, I could see the colour winding between orange and golden areas of ground. I photographed the scene in 2022, following that blue shape through the frame rather than including a wider view of the region. The result brought out an arrangement of colour and texture that was difficult to see from where I stood below.
The channel narrows at the bottom, then opens into broader curves toward the upper right. Smaller blue patches and pale streaks extend into the warmer ground on the left. Along the right side, rougher yellow earth forms a distinct boundary, giving the main shape a more defined edge. I chose a vertical composition because it suited that long, winding movement. It allows the eye to follow the channel while still taking in the mottled surfaces beside it.
The colours drew me in immediately, but their variations are what keep me looking. There are dark blue pockets, lighter turquoise passages, and subtle grey areas between the brighter sections. The orange ground is equally varied, broken by pale marks and smaller branching shapes. For me, this photograph captures the value of looking at a landscape from another perspective. It remains a view of Iceland, yet its close framing gives it the visual freedom of abstract art. In a contemporary room, the blue and warm earth tones offer a clear colour relationship with enough fine detail to reward closer attention.
