Blue Mineral Patterns Edged By White And Golden Earth
A long band of blue and pale mineral ground became the focus of this drone photograph near Lake Mývatn. I made it while exploring northern Iceland’s geothermal fields in 2022, using the overhead view to see how the colours and surface shapes related to one another. What had seemed like separate features from the ground formed a connected arrangement from above. The blue centre, white edges, and golden surroundings gave the image a strong structure.
The main band runs vertically through the frame, broad near the top and more tightly contained below. Small dark pools interrupt its rough surface, with a larger blue hollow toward the upper left. Pale deposits form an uneven border, separating the central textures from smoother orange areas at the sides. I liked the contrast between those broad expanses of colour and the dense detail within the basin. Keeping the composition close allowed the smaller pools and mottled patches to contribute without losing the larger shape.
This photograph is as much about the eye’s movement as it is about the landscape itself. I follow the blue down through the frame, then return along the changing pale edges. There are enough irregular forms to make each pass a little different. Aerial photography gave me access to that pattern while keeping the scene rooted in the place I was exploring. As abstract nature wall art, it brings a vivid blue and gold palette to a contemporary interior, with fine surface detail that remains interesting beyond the first impression.
