Fine Pale Branches Against A Warm Desert Wall
Bare trees form a dense pattern of pale branches beneath a red rock wall in the American Southwest. I photographed this desert scene in 2008, drawn to the contrast between the fine, tangled growth and the broad, warm surface behind it. The colour image stays close to the landscape, with no open sky to distract from those textures.
During my wandering, it was the trees’ unadorned shapes that caught my attention. Without leaves, their branches are easy to follow, even where they overlap. Some rise in narrow arcs; others reach sideways into the surrounding scrub. I like the way the collection of small lines creates a loose rhythm across the width of the photograph.
The cliff provides a very different structure. Its reddish bands and darker crevices sit above the trees, giving the view a solid background. Lower in the frame, thin stems, dry ground, and a fallen branch continue the quieter tones of the foreground. The larger forms and smaller details are held together by a palette of rust, tan, grey, and muted brown.
I wanted the image to preserve that meeting of rock and branches rather than turn the trees into isolated silhouettes. There is a sense of enclosure here, with the desert wall close behind the growth. As a piece for a room with earthy colours, it offers an intricate landscape that rewards looking across it slowly, following the branches and then returning to the broader shapes of stone.
