A Bull Elephant Approaching Across the Open Grassland
I watched this bull elephant moving slowly toward me in northern Tanzania. He was known to the guides in the area, and there was time to observe his approach without rushing the photograph. His head and ears formed a broad outline above the grass, with one curved tusk especially prominent. I chose a vertical frame that would hold his full figure while leaving a little space around him in the open landscape.
The frontal view makes the folds of his skin an important part of the image. They run across his forehead, down the trunk and around the legs, changing in scale as the eye moves through the photograph. The visible tusk curves inward beside the trunk, making a pale, smooth shape against all that darker texture. One front leg extends ahead of the other, and the trunk bends near its tip. Behind him, the grass and distant ground become progressively softer, leaving the elephant clearly separated from the setting.
Black and white helped me concentrate on his form and the differences between those surfaces. I kept the background understated so that the ears, trunk and tusk would remain easy to follow. The photograph records a slow moment of movement rather than a sudden action. What I remember is having time to watch the placement of his feet and the changing outline of his head as he came forward. That measured approach gives the image its rhythm, with the open grassland still visible around him.
