Three Baboons Pausing on the Dry Serengeti Ground

An infant sits close against its mother, while a larger youngster rests a short distance beside them. I photographed these three baboons in the Serengeti in northern Tanzania, keeping their small gathering central against the dry grass. The black and white treatment brings attention to their faces, the different textures of their fur and the simple arrangement of their bodies on the ground.

I spent long hours observing the troop from a respectful distance during my travels. This was one of the quieter moments that stayed with me. The adult sits upright at the left, looking past the edge of the frame. Between the two larger animals, the infant’s dark fur makes its small pale face especially clear. The youngster at the right faces more directly towards me, with one limb reaching into the space between them and its tail extending across the ground. Brittle grass stems fill the surrounding area, leaving the animals as the only strong vertical forms.

What I value in this photograph is the chance to look closely at an ordinary pause rather than a dramatic encounter. Their positions and expressions hold my attention without requiring an explanation of what each animal was thinking. The space around them also matters: it gives the group room within the landscape while keeping the details readable. For a wildlife enthusiast, the photograph brings an intimate view of Serengeti life to a room. For me, it remains a memory of patient observation and the small scenes that become visible when there is time to watch.
