Blue Hour Beneath Sydney's Iconic Harbour Bridge
I wanted the bridge to feel enormous.
Instead of photographing the Sydney Harbour Bridge from a familiar distant viewpoint, I moved underneath it and used the steel structure itself to dominate the frame. The bridge begins high above me, cuts diagonally across the photograph and stretches toward the Sydney skyline on the opposite side of the harbour.
This was 2016, during blue hour, when the city lights were beginning to appear but there was still enough colour left in the sky. Deep blue fills most of the frame, while the last sunset light burns orange, pink and violet along the horizon. Beneath it, Sydney Harbour settles into cooler tones and the illuminated buildings on the left begin to define the city after dark.
What interested me most was the contrast in scale. The skyline appears relatively small beneath the immense lattice of steel overhead. Individual lights along the bridge create tiny points of warmth within the dark structure, while the open sky on the left gives all that weight somewhere to breathe.
Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of those landmarks that has been photographed countless times, so I was less interested in simply recording what it looked like. I wanted to find a viewpoint where its engineering, mass and geometry became the photograph.
For me, the sunset completed it. Architecture, city, harbour and evening light all came together for a few minutes, turning a familiar Sydney landmark into something much more dramatic.
