Stone Arches And Gothic Windows Beneath A Clouded Sky
Rows of stone arches run around a quiet courtyard, with tall windows and an elaborate roofline rising above them. The building fills most of the scene, yet the open lawn gives its details space to breathe. I photographed this view at the University of Sydney in 2016, drawn to the combination of repeated forms and small architectural variations.
The lower arcade sets a steady rhythm across the image. Above it, pointed windows, decorative stonework and narrow towers create a much more intricate pattern. The roof has its own strong diagonal lines, leading toward the small tower near the centre. I like the way the eye can move from a simple arch to a more complicated detail without leaving the overall arrangement.
Black and white brings the stone surfaces and cloud shapes into the same tonal range. Deep shadows sit inside the arcade, while the upper walls remain lighter. The sky is full of changing grey, giving the formal architecture a softer, less predictable background. There are no prominent figures in the courtyard to compete with the building’s structure.
This Sydney architecture wall art has a particular appeal for someone connected to the university, as well as anyone who enjoys Gothic windows and old stone courtyards. It would suit a study or office with books and natural wood, where the detailed facade can become a point of interest. The photograph offers both the calm of an enclosed outdoor space and the visual richness of its surrounding architecture.
