Sydney Ferris Wheel Geometry Against Dark Clouds Black and White Photography

Bright Spokes and Passenger Cars Against a Clouded Sky

The Ferris wheel fills this view from below, its pale spokes crossing a darker, clouded Sydney sky. Passenger cars follow the outer rim on the left, while the wheel’s centre sits among a dense network of lines. I photographed the structure in black and white, concentrating on the geometry that becomes visible when the surrounding city falls outside the frame.

The spokes radiate from the hub in several directions, overlapping with shorter braces and the circular rim. Near the centre, those lines are close together; toward the edge, the spaces open up and the sky becomes more apparent. The cars add a different rhythm, repeating solid shapes against the wheel’s more delicate framework. Their darker undersides help separate them from the bright metal around them.

I like the contrast between the precision of the structure and the changing cloud behind it. The wheel is orderly, but the close viewpoint makes its many intersecting parts feel lively rather than static. Monochrome keeps the shapes clear: bright spokes, darker supports and softer tones in the sky each contribute something different. The photograph invites a first look at the larger curve, then a second look at the smaller connections holding it together.

Made in 2016, this image suits someone drawn to engineering, fairground structures or abstract details found within real places. It can bring an energetic pattern to a study or workspace, with the recognisable passenger cars keeping the geometry connected to the experience of a Ferris wheel.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
