Monument Valley Mittens at Sunset Desert Landscape Photograph

Two Sandstone Forms Beneath a Softly Coloured Sky

The two rock formations are separated by a great deal of open land and sky. One stands much closer on the left; the other appears smaller across the desert. I find that difference in distance particularly satisfying in this sunset view of the Mittens at Monument Valley.

The nearer formation shows strong vertical cuts and a slender projection beside its broader upper face. Its sloping base spreads across the lower landscape, where small ridges, stones and sparse vegetation remain visible. The farther butte has a simpler outline at this scale, but its warm face connects it to the rock in the foreground.

Colour changes gently above them. The sky moves from deeper blue through pale gold to a soft pink near the horizon. Rather than filling the view with heavy clouds, it offers a smooth setting for the uneven stone. I wanted the rock surfaces to remain clear enough that the photograph would be about more than their silhouettes.

I photographed this scene in 2008 in Monument Valley, within the Navajo Nation. My attention was on the space between the formations and the way evening light tied them together. The rough foreground gives the view a starting point, while the distant horizon keeps it open. Looking at the photograph, I return first to the nearer face, then follow the land toward the second butte and the narrow band of colour beyond it.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
