Tufa Towers and Mountain Light Across Mono Lake
The mountains were still holding the warm sunrise light when I made this photograph at Mono Lake in California.
I was there in 2013, drawn to the strange tufa formations rising from the water and the way their rough, irregular shapes contrasted with the calm lake around them. The largest formation dominates the right side of the frame, while smaller towers and fragments lead the eye across the water toward the distant mountains.
What transformed the scene for me was the light. Soft pink and orange reached the mountain peaks while cooler blues remained across the lake and lower landscape. Above everything, heavy clouds caught traces of the same pastel colour. For a few minutes, warm and cool tones existed together without either one overwhelming the photograph.
The still water was equally important. Reflections beneath the tufa formations extend their shapes downward and create a visual balance between the rugged rock and the smooth surface of Mono Lake.
I have always been attracted to landscapes that feel slightly unfamiliar, and the tufa towers give Mono Lake that quality immediately. They look sculptural, almost improbable, particularly when separated by quiet water and viewed against the mountains beyond.
For me, the photograph is about that combination: unusual geology, open water, distant mountains and the fleeting colour of sunrise. The landscape already had everything it needed. I simply had to be there when the light brought all of those elements together.
