Blue Water Winds Between Warm Rock Beneath Soft Dawn Colour
A band of pink stretches above Lake Powell at sunrise, with blue water winding through the warm coloured rock below. The foreground shrubs and reddish ground give the view a close starting point before it opens toward the distant cliffs. I’m drawn to how the morning colour brings these different parts of the landscape together without making them look the same.
The water is the clearest route through the picture. It follows the pale shore, narrowing toward the left and appearing again farther back. Along its edge, light coloured rock forms a strong boundary against the deeper blue. I like tracing that boundary, then looking beyond it to the rounded sandstone and the flat topped cliffs in the distance.
The foreground holds another kind of detail. Small shrubs rise from the rough ground, and their muted greens sit among the rust and orange tones. Above the distant land, the sky changes from blue grey to pink. That softer colour gives the scene a quieter finish after the textures and curves below.
I made this photograph in 2007. For me, its appeal lies in the balance between the lake’s winding shape and the open country around it. As wall art, it can add warm earth colours and gentle dawn light to a living room, bedroom or study. It may resonate with someone who enjoys Lake Powell, desert waters or the American Southwest. There is space to take in the whole landscape, and smaller details to return to in the shoreline and foreground.
