Frozen Puddle at Sunrise on Acadia’s Rocky Coast Colour Photography
Cool Ice and Golden Rock Along a Quiet Coastline
The frozen puddle remains cool grey while sunrise turns the surrounding Acadia rock a rich gold. That difference was what held my attention: a small, smooth surface of ice within a rugged coastal landscape. I photographed the scene in colour, keeping the foreground puddle large enough to matter alongside the sea and tree-lined cliffs beyond it.
Its rounded edge interrupts the rough ledge, offering a quieter shape among cracks, ridges and angular stone. The ice carries faint surface markings, but its tone stays much more even than the rock around it. Farther along the coast, broad slabs and smaller outcrops catch the same low light, leading toward the darker evergreens above the cliffs.
The sea on the left provides another open area. A few offshore rocks break its surface, and a low cloud band rests near the horizon. Above, the sky shifts from warm colour close to the water into a clearer blue higher up. I like how those larger changes echo the smaller contrast between ice and stone near the camera.
Made in 2018, the photograph brings together two different feelings of the same morning: winter’s lingering coolness and the warmth of new light. It suits someone who enjoys Acadia National Park, rocky coastal scenery or landscapes with a strong foreground detail. In a living room or study, the golden rock can bring warmth while the frozen puddle gives the eye a calm place to pause before following the coast into the distance.
