Empty Chairs and Broad Umbrella Shadows Beside Lake Ontario
The empty chairs give this HTO Park photograph its pause. I framed Toronto’s harbourfront beach with umbrellas spread across the sand and Lake Ontario beyond the walkway. In black and white, the broad canopies, thin poles and dark oval shadows become a clear pattern beneath a much more irregular sky.
I like the variety within that simple arrangement. Some chairs sit directly under the umbrellas, while others face the water from a little farther away. Their slatted backs add small lines against the sand, which is marked by footprints and shallow impressions. The nearest canopy occupies the left side of the view; others recede along the beach, giving the horizontal composition a steady depth. A boat on the lake adds another point to discover beyond the park’s edge.
The clouds are an important part of the image. Bright rounded forms gather across a darker sky, echoing the umbrellas’ shapes without repeating their order. I wanted that contrast between a designed public space and the open waterfront to remain visible. Monochrome shifts attention from the umbrellas’ familiar colour to their outlines and the light falling around them. For someone with a connection to Toronto, the print offers a harbourfront view built around an ordinary place to sit and look out. What stays with me is the amount of space between those chairs, with the lake continuing beyond their small, shaded gathering places.
