Pale Buildings and Trees Against Capri’s Steep Hillside
The buildings seem to gather around the slope rather than sit on a level street. I photographed these hillside homes on Capri, Italy, during a summer visit in 2005. In black and white, their pale walls, dark windows and layered terraces become a close study of how the town meets the island’s terrain.
The composition holds several different scales together. Nearby facades show arched openings and smaller architectural details, while taller trees rise between the buildings. Behind them, a steep rocky hillside fills the upper background. I like that the landscape remains part of the picture even though the architecture occupies much of the frame.
Exploring Capri’s alleys and winding streets gave me many changing viewpoints. This one kept my attention because of the way the homes overlap. Rooflines and balconies lead from one building to another, and the trees soften the more regular edges. Monochrome makes those connections easier to follow, with the light walls standing apart from the darker foliage.
For me, the photograph recalls a summer encounter through shape and texture rather than bright colour. It is a quieter view of Capri, centred on the buildings and hillside instead of a broad coastal vista. As wall art, it can appeal to someone who enjoys Italian architecture, Mediterranean towns or black and white travel photography. Its pale tonal range offers an understated presence, while the layered homes provide enough detail to keep the eye moving through the scene.
