Curly Haired Man Drinking Coffee Inside Manhattan Cafe

Some of the strongest street portraits I’ve made in Manhattan didn’t happen on the street at all. They happened just inside the glass—where the pace of the city slows for a minute, and someone gets to be still.

I noticed him through the front window of a small café near Union Square. Curled hair catching the soft indoor light, glasses just barely reflecting the world behind me, a quiet grip around a ceramic mug that seemed to anchor him to the moment. He wasn’t posing, and he wasn’t aware of me. Just halfway into a sip, eyes steady, somewhere between thought and habit.

There’s a weight to these kinds of moments in New York City. The background becomes layered with plants, reflections, shelving, and hints of movement beyond the glass. But right here, the frame holds. A lived-in sweater. A few undone buttons at the collar. A hand paused mid-motion as the steam from the coffee lifted out of sight. It’s the kind of ordinary scene that most people walk past without ever noticing—and yet it contains everything about urban life that matters.

I photographed this on location during a winter walk through Manhattan, moving from block to block and letting my instincts guide me wherever the light felt right. Nothing arranged. Nothing was asked for. Just a quiet exchange between subject and place that lasted less than a second before the moment disappeared again.

I personally sign each print and include a certificate of authenticity. It’s produced using archival pigment inks on Epson Premium Luster paper to preserve the tonal range and subtle textures captured in this monochrome portrait.
