A Direct Glance Beside a Shaded Manhattan Wall
A direct glance gives this Manhattan portrait its centre, with bright leaves filling the space behind the woman and a stone wall supporting her outstretched arm. I photographed her during an afternoon walk along the edge of a park. The black and white image brings together the soft texture of her hair, the pattern of her dress and the rough surface of the wall.
I was moving slowly through this quieter part of the city, stopping where the light caught my attention. Here, the foliage created a background of small highlights and darker branches. Her turned shoulders give the portrait a diagonal shape, balanced by the horizontal line of the wall and her extended forearm. A bracelet catches a little light near the right edge. I kept that wider view because the pose, the surrounding leaves and the stonework all contribute to the picture; the setting is more than a background for a face.
What I like is the contrast between her clear gaze and the scattered light behind her. The monochrome treatment gives each texture room without the colours of the foliage or clothing taking over. I prefer to let the expression speak for itself, with no story attached to what she might have been thinking. For someone who enjoys portraits in natural settings, the photograph offers a close human presence within an urban green space. It holds the moment I encountered during that afternoon walk, when a pocket of Manhattan’s trees became the setting for a portrait.
