Chrome and Knitting Beneath a Bright Yellow Facade
A pale blue Chevrolet occupies the foreground of this Havana photograph, parked in front of a vivid yellow wall. Two women sit on the curb beside it, working with yarn and knitting. I brought the car and the women into the same square composition, keeping the large area of colour behind them visible. The contrast between blue and yellow establishes the scene immediately, while the smaller human activity invites a closer look.
The Chevrolet’s front end offers an intricate arrangement of chrome, circular headlights and grille details. Reflections along the bumper and hood add lighter highlights against the blue bodywork. To the right, the women’s hands and the items in their laps create a much quieter area of detail. I enjoy how the photograph allows both subjects to hold attention without asking either one to explain the other.
Above them, a tall barred window and a wall lantern break up the yellow facade. Their darker outlines give the upper half a simple structure, while the paving stones below introduce a finer pattern around the car’s tires. The wall remains broad and clear enough for the colour to carry through the entire view.
My photograph combines an American classic car with an ordinary moment on a Cuban street. For someone who enjoys Havana, vintage vehicles or colour street photography, this print offers a bright palette alongside details of daily life. The car is prominent, but the seated women give the scene its particular character.
