Scratched Lines Cross Faded Bands of Painted Colour
Fine scratched lines cover a painted wall at Voronet Monastery in Romania. Dark blue-grey shapes, warm cream, brown, and a narrow red band remain visible beneath the dense marks. This close colour photograph concentrates on the layered surface, allowing painted forms and etched lettering to share the frame.
The scratches are lighter than much of the paint, so they stand out differently as they cross each area. Against dark colour, individual letters and lines become clear. Over pale sections, they merge into a more continuous texture. I find that changing visibility important to the way the image is read.
The larger painted shapes provide its structure. Broad vertical divisions and curved dark edges remain recognizable even where the surface is heavily marked. They keep the photograph from becoming a uniform field of scratches, giving the eye a slower pattern to follow beneath the busy detail.
I photographed this wall in 2011.
My interest is in what can be seen rather than an assumed story about who made each mark or when. The surface holds different kinds of lines, colours, and wear together, and the close view reveals their interaction. As a Romanian travel photography print, the image offers a textured architectural detail with an abstract quality. Looking from a distance emphasizes the colour divisions; moving closer brings the fine scratches and lettering forward.
