Illuminated Domes and Minarets Above the Evening City

The light had almost disappeared, but the mosque seemed to become more visible as the city darkened around it.

From this elevated viewpoint in Istanbul, I was drawn to the way the illuminated architecture rises above the surrounding buildings. The immense central dome anchors the scene, while four slender minarets climb into a warm evening sky. Their amber lighting separates them from the deepening shadows below and gives the entire structure a remarkable presence.

I kept a generous amount of sky in the composition because its colour mattered. Soft orange and brown tones spread across the upper half of the frame, creating a restrained backdrop rather than competing with the architecture. Below, the modern city remains visible in layers of rooftops, windows and scattered lights, giving the mosque both scale and context.

What interested me most was that relationship between the monumental and the everyday. The mosque dominates the skyline, yet it is still embedded within the dense fabric of Istanbul rather than standing apart from it.

Dusk is often when a city changes character most quickly. Details disappear, artificial lights begin to define the architecture, and familiar buildings take on a completely different weight.

That transition is what I wanted to hold onto here. For me, the photograph is as much about Istanbul after daylight as it is about the mosque itself—the glowing domes and minarets rising above a city gradually settling into night.
