A Small Chapel and Farm Buildings Rest Above the Fields
The chapel is a small, pale shape on the crest of the hill, with a long farmhouse beside it and trees gathered around them. I photographed this view of Vitaleta Chapel in Tuscany, Italy, across the rolling fields. The colour landscape print keeps the buildings within their setting, where open ground and soft light give them room.
The nearest field slopes across the lower part of the scene, carrying fine lines and warm brown tones. Behind it, a darker band of trees separates that foreground from the higher field. The chapel and farm buildings sit along the ridge above, their straight edges contrasting with the land’s gentle curves. A distant hill appears through the haze on the right.
I made this photograph in 2010. What I enjoy is the proportion of the scene: the buildings are easy to notice, yet they occupy only a small part of the landscape. Light catches the chapel’s face and the end of the farmhouse, while the trees around them introduce darker shapes. The pale sky leaves the view feeling open and unhurried.
For someone who loves Tuscany, rural Italy or countryside photographs in warm earth tones, this print can be a quiet reminder of the place. It can suit a living room, study or a space furnished with natural materials. For me, the appeal lies in the relationship between the few buildings on the ridge and the much larger sweep of fields around them.
