A Weathered Church Tower Within a Web of Branches
Bare branches surround an abandoned church in this black and white photograph from rural Maine. I kept a large foreground trunk beside the building, letting the trees become part of the architectural view rather than clearing them out of the composition. The church’s pale trim and weathered siding remain visible through that irregular frame.
The tower is the strongest vertical form behind the trees. Its dark, worn upper section rises above a simpler front facade, where a round window sits over the doorway. I like the difference between those clear architectural shapes and the smaller branches crossing around them. The scene feels layered rather than presented as a clean elevation of the building.
Along the side, patches of worn surface interrupt the horizontal siding. Tall narrow windows repeat beneath the roofline, and the darker ground holds leaves and scattered natural texture. A neighboring building appears at the right, keeping the church within a rural setting instead of making it seem entirely isolated.
Black and white draws attention to that combination of structure and wear. The pale door surround remains crisp within the greyer wall, while the tower and branches carry deeper tones. For someone interested in old churches or abandoned architecture, this view offers a building whose character is visible in its surfaces and proportions. I prefer to leave its past open rather than assign stories to the people who once used it. The photograph holds what is present: a church still standing among trees, its familiar shape marked by time and weather.
