Hanging Moss and Fine Branches Reaching Into Open Sky
Looking upward changes the shape of this cypress tree. The trunk rises through the centre, hanging moss gathers around the lower branches, and the finer upper limbs spread across the sky. I photographed this view in the Caddo Lake wetlands in 2021, drawn to the contrast between the dense texture below and the more open outline of the canopy above.
I like how the tree gives the photograph a clear vertical path. The eye can follow the trunk upward through the draped strands, then separate into the smaller branches near the top. Surrounding trees form a darker lower edge, making the central crown more distinct. Black and white brings attention to the different kinds of line: the long hanging moss, the rough trunk and the much finer twigs against the pale background. A bright opening low in the view introduces another point of light within the denser woodland.
For me, the image has an expressive quality without needing a wide view of the wetland. The upward perspective carries the scale of the tree, while the branches and moss provide details to examine. On a wall, I see it offering a strong natural form in a restrained monochrome palette. It would appeal to an interest in cypress trees, woodland photography or images where a close viewpoint makes familiar nature feel more imposing. The composition remains rooted in the central trunk, but its appeal unfolds through the many smaller lines extending from it.
