A Broad Dark Trunk Rises Above Pale Wetland Water
A large cypress trunk rises from pale swamp water in this black and white photograph from Texas. Its broad, ridged base occupies the centre of the view, with long branches reaching across a background filled with hanging moss. A smaller trunk stands nearby, giving another point of scale within the dense grove.
I made the image during a photo tour through the Texas and Louisiana wetlands. What drew me to this tree was its substantial shape. The base spreads widely before narrowing upward, and the bark carries deep lines that remain clear even against the finer textures behind it.
The branches give the photograph a second direction. They extend sideways across the frame, interrupting the long vertical strands of moss. I like how those heavier lines remain visible within such a detailed background, keeping the main tree distinct without removing it from the surrounding forest.
The water creates a lighter area along the bottom. Small flecks and marks on its surface contrast with the dark bark, while the distant grove fades into softer grey tones. That separation brings the central trunk forward and gives its flared base a clear outline.
Monochrome suits the image’s emphasis on structure. The photograph follows a few strong shapes through a dense wetland setting: the rooted base, upright trunk, reaching limbs, and fine moss. Looking closer adds texture, but the tree’s form remains the reason I stopped to make the picture.
