Caddo Lake Cypress and Spanish Moss Black and White Photography
Light Catches Draped Branches Above a Dark Reflective Channel
While drifting through Caddo Lake in Texas, I eased the boat to a stop when this cypress came into view. Its spreading branches were draped with Spanish moss, catching light against a much darker forest. This black and white photograph treats the tree almost as a portrait, with a narrow strip of water beneath it.
The nearest trunk gives the image a firm vertical centre, but the branches move outward in several directions. Moss hangs from them in long, fine strands, creating a softer pattern around the rough bark. I wanted enough of the canopy in the frame to show those different textures together, rather than focus on the trunk alone.
Behind the brighter tree, other trunks and curtains of moss recede into shadow. That darker setting makes the lit branches easier to follow, while leaving details for a slower look. At the bottom, small highlights and reflections run across the water. The channel stays quiet within the composition, grounding the tree without taking attention from its form.
Spending time on this lake has taught me to let its pace shape the way I photograph it. Here, stopping the boat gave me room to watch the light and settle on a view. Monochrome brings out the tree’s layered structure, from the broad trunk to the finest strands of moss. The photograph holds that close attention while keeping the surrounding forest and water present.
