Twisted Branches Rise Before Layered Desert Rock
A bare tree stands before layered rock in this black and white Monument Valley photograph. Its twisted branches reach into a clouded sky, while the trunk rises from a foreground of exposed stone and scattered grass. I was drawn to the contrast between the tree’s irregular outline and the broad horizontal shapes behind it.
The trunk sits close to the centre, giving the composition a clear point of reference. Above it, the branches divide and turn in different directions, creating an open network against the sky. Some overlap the pale rock, where their darker lines remain distinct; others are outlined by brighter patches of cloud.
The rock itself has plenty of character. Rounded edges, shallow ledges, and darker gaps create a layered surface that continues across the frame. Near the bottom, smaller stones and cracks bring the same texture closer. The tree links those foreground details to the sky, carrying the eye upward without hiding the landscape behind it.
I made this image in 2010. Monochrome allows the bark, stone, and clouds to share a common range of tones while keeping their different surfaces clear. What interests me most is the meeting of those forms: an angular, branching shape against solid rock, with enough open sky to give both space. The photograph offers a desert landscape centred on one distinctive tree rather than a distant landmark.
