Blue Ice Beneath a Quiet Grey Antarctic Sky
The strongest colour is below the waterline. A turquoise band follows the base of this Antarctic iceberg, deepening into blue beneath the dark sea. Above it, the ice is pale and roughly textured, almost blending into the snowy grey atmosphere. I kept that contrast at the centre of the photograph.
The iceberg stretches across the frame as a low, irregular mass. Its upper edge rises and falls through ridges, while the face is broken by small ledges and recesses. The smoother line where it meets the water gives all that detail a clear lower boundary. Several smaller pieces of ice sit nearby, including a bright fragment in the foreground on the right.
Snow appears as fine specks against the darker water. The distant view fades into grey, leaving very little to distract from the ice and its reflection. I like how the water repeats the iceberg’s shape without preserving every detail. The submerged blue seems to continue the formation downward, making its visible edge feel like only part of the subject.
This is a restrained colour photograph, despite that remarkable turquoise. White, grey, and dark water occupy most of it, allowing the blue to have more presence. For me, its appeal lies in the relationship between a rough, substantial form and the quiet space around it. It is a view of Antarctic ice that rewards both the first impression of colour and a slower look at the surface.
