A Solitary Home Beneath a Vast Arizona Sky

The house is almost lost in the landscape.

I made this photograph while travelling through Arizona in 2010, drawn less to the building itself than to the extraordinary amount of space surrounding it. A solitary home sits low on the horizon, accompanied by only a few small structures, while open land stretches across the frame beneath an enormous sky.

That imbalance of scale is what interested me. The house occupies only a tiny portion of the photograph. Everything else is distance, scrubland and clouds. Rather than moving closer, I deliberately allowed the landscape to overwhelm the human presence within it.

Black and white strengthened that relationship. Without colour, the scene becomes quieter and more elemental. The pale ground, dark vegetation and small geometric buildings sit beneath layer after layer of clouds, some soft and distant, others heavy enough to dominate the upper half of the image.

Arizona is often photographed through dramatic rock formations and intense desert colour, but this scene offered something very different. It was sparse. Almost empty.

I have always been attracted to landscapes where scale can be felt immediately, and this was one of those places. The small house provides just enough reference to understand how broad the country around it really is.

For me, the photograph is ultimately about space—the immense Arizona landscape, the changing sky above it, and one small home holding its place on the horizon.
