Beijing Forbidden City Moat Reflection Black and White Photography

Waterside Buildings and Bare Trees Mirrored in Still Water

The water repeats nearly every roofline and branch, turning a row of buildings into a balanced double image. I photographed this view across the Forbidden City moat in Beijing in 2015. In black and white, the still reflection becomes as important as the weathered architecture above it.

The central roof gives the composition a clear shape, with lower buildings extending to either side. Bare trees interrupt those steady lines, their fine branches appearing again beneath the waterline. Windows, uneven plaster and practical additions to the walls keep the scene grounded in everyday use. I like that the reflection holds those smaller details along with the larger forms.

Monochrome connects the different surfaces without making them identical. Pale walls stand against darker roofs and tree trunks, while the water offers a softer version of the same contrasts. The narrow horizontal boundary between building and reflection becomes the picture’s organising line, letting the eye move across the scene before exploring its mirrored lower half.

This photograph recalls the quiet moments I found while exploring Beijing. What held my attention was the still water and the ordinary buildings beside it, rather than a grand view of the palace itself. As wall art, it can appeal to someone interested in Chinese travel, architectural reflections or restrained black and white photography. The balanced composition offers a calm focal point, with enough texture in the buildings and trees to reward a closer look.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
