New York Pride Raised Arm Portrait Black and White Street Photography
A Smiling Marcher With a Handmade Love Trumps All Sign
Standing in the street during New York City's 2022 Pride celebrations, I photographed this marcher with an arm raised above the crowd. A handmade sign rests across the front of the figure, its large Love Trumps All lettering clearly visible. I worked in black and white, concentrating on the smile, gesture, and close arrangement of people within the frame.
The raised arm runs out through the upper edge, giving the portrait a strong diagonal line. A sun hat and sunglasses frame the face, while the striped shirt adds a lighter pattern beneath it. The sign contains a drawn portrait, handwritten words, and a decorated border, bringing a second face into the composition. Behind the main figure, the crowd remains softer and less distinct, keeping the foreground expression and placard easy to read.
I responded to the scene as the march passed, rather than asking anyone to stop for a portrait. Direct light catches the face, clothing, and paper, with darker shadows giving those surfaces depth. What holds the photograph together for me is the connection between the lifted arm and the sign held close to the body. One gesture reaches beyond the frame; the other keeps the handmade message within it. The surrounding people give the moment its public setting, while the close view preserves the particular expression I encountered on that day.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
