Weathered Advertising Signs on an Atlanta Illinois Wall
A collection of old advertising signs caught my eye on a side street in Atlanta, Illinois, during one of my long road trips across the United States. The large Coca-Cola panel anchors this black and white photograph, with agricultural signs and a small coffee advertisement arranged above it. Vertical wooden siding gives the varied lettering and shapes a steady background.
I was exploring Route 66 when I stopped to photograph the wall. The broad, flowing Coca-Cola script contrasts with the circular Gainer Feeds design at the upper left. Smaller signs bring in Farmers Union and Illinois Farm Bureau lettering, while a coffee illustration sits between the larger panels. At the lower right, a small Impala image overlaps the edge of the Coca-Cola sign. I liked how these different pieces fitted together without becoming one uniform surface. Their sizes, borders and type styles each hold a place in the composition.
The weathering is as much a subject as the advertising. Dark patches interrupt the pale lettering, the large lower panel has an irregular edge, and the older surfaces carry marks that remain clear in monochrome. A strip of brick at the left and the pavement below give the display its street setting. For someone who enjoys Route 66, vintage advertising or American road trip photography, this image brings those interests into a single detailed view. For me, it recalls the pleasure of slowing down in a small town and finding a photograph in an ordinary wall.
